CFL Holds the First Session of 2021 MTI Forum
On April 8th, College of Foreign Language successfully held the first session of 2021 MTI Forum in Room 1425, Gengdu Building, West Campus. All MTI postgraduates of the Class of 2019 and 2020 attended the forum.
The three keynote speakers for this session were Zhang Ruodan, Zhang Hao and Guan Hao, MTI students from the Class of 2019. In light of current trends, Zhang Ruodan gave an overview of China’s webcomics and the present-day developments of its English translation. Following a discussion of the technical terms involved in translating webcomics, the term extraction process and some typical examples, she sorted out strategies for translating different terms. In view of the fact that thinking influences language, Zhang Hao proposed that historical and geographical factors, in turn, influence the modes of thinking both in China and the West. To further illustrate his point, he cited specific examples to dwell on three linguistic aspects: subject and voice conversion, shift of semantic focus, and semantic change. Guan Hao shared his personal experiences on translating tourism products. Having examined translation strategies for “Culture-Specific Items” and defined the concept of “tourism product”, Guan concluded his presentation with some brilliant examples that inspired an animated discussion.
At the end of each presentation, Dean Wang Haoyong commented with valuable insights, from which all the attending students benefited greatly.
Initiated by CFL in October 2020, MTI Forum features a college-provided platform whose activities are hosted and organized by MTI students themselves, with a view to enabling them to share their academic views, research findings and achievements of each study period at regular intervals. So far, MTI Forum has been held successfully for 9 sessions with rewarding results that are helpful to both teachers and students alike.(Trans. Zhang Haiying)
